The education of our children has always sought to represent the current thoughts, trends and methods of the day, ultimately responsible not just for educating young people to read, write and add up, but preparing them for the world they will eventually seek out, discover and change for themselves. The challenge has always been to try to see far enough ahead to anticipate the world they will be facing – a challenge that today is far harder than ever before.
With information technology changing the world on a daily basis, a billion websites crying out for attention, billions of voices all proclaiming reliability, credibility and truth, our children’s education today needs to be as much about viewing the world more critically than we may have done before. It seems that the unanticipated gifts of the digital age are cynicism and scepticism, both vital tools needed to sift through the barrage of educational, political and cultural information poured across the global network every hour.
